What makes a farshi different

A farshi shalwar is cut extremely wide and long, so the fabric pools and sweeps along the floor as you walk. That drape is the entire point of the garment, and it is also the thing most farshi suits get wrong.

The width has to be cut generously through the leg and the fabric has to have enough weight to fall rather than float. Cheaper versions narrow the cut to save material, and the result reads as an ordinary wide-leg trouser rather than a farshi. Ours are cut properly, which is why they hang the way they do on the rail.

It is usually worn with a shorter kameez or a fitted shirt, so the proportions stay balanced and the drape stays the focus. Heavier silks, organzas and fendy silks work best; lighter fabrics tend to lift instead of pooling.

Farshi, sharara or gharara?

These three get confused constantly and they are genuinely different cuts.

A farshi is wide from the waist down and sweeps the floor. The drape is the feature.

A sharara flares from the knee, in one clean line.

A gharara flares from the calf, with a decorative band where the two sections join.

If you want something dramatic that photographs well standing still, a farshi. If you want to dance, a sharara.

Try the drape before you buy

Farshi is the hardest of these styles to judge from a photograph, because a picture cannot show you how much fabric there actually is or how it moves. Both Brampton stores carry the full range, and our team can adjust the length so it sweeps without you standing on it, with most alterations finished in two to three days.

If you are ordering online instead, we ship across Canada from our Brampton locations, with free shipping over $100 within Ontario and over $150 CAD elsewhere in Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a farshi shalwar?
A very wide, very long shalwar cut so the fabric spreads and trails along the floor. The name comes from the Urdu word for floor. It was court dress in the Mughal era and has come back strongly in the last couple of years.

What is the difference between a farshi and a normal shalwar?
Width and length. A regular shalwar is cut to sit at or just above the ankle. A farshi is cut far wider and long enough to pool on the ground, which is why it needs so much more fabric.

What fabric works best for a farshi shalwar?
Anything with enough weight to fall: fendy silk, heavy organza, silk blends. The fabric has to do the work, so lightweight georgettes and chiffons tend to disappoint in this cut.

Is a farshi shalwar practical to wear?
For a reception, a nikah or a formal dinner, yes. For a night where you will be dancing, most people find a sharara easier. Come in and walk in one, which tells you more in ten seconds than any description will.
