What a sherwani is

A sherwani is a long, fitted coat worn over a kurta and churidar or straight trousers. It buttons up the front, sits somewhere between the knee and the calf, and it is the most formal thing a man can wear to a South Asian wedding.

It is not the same as a kurta. A kurta is a loose tunic worn on its own and it suits almost any occasion. A sherwani is structured, tailored and built for one kind of day, which is why it is what most grooms wear.

Choosing by role

If you are the groom, this is the piece everyone photographs. Ivory, cream and gold read traditional and hold up under a camera. Heavier embroidery and a longer cut carry more presence, and an indo-western silhouette is the option if you want something less formal without losing the occasion.

If you are a brother, a friend or a guest, step back a shade. Blush, dusty blue and softer pastels look considered without competing with the groom. Lighter embroidery is the right call for a reception or a sangeet, where you will be moving.

Fit is the whole thing

A sherwani lives or dies on the shoulder and the chest. Those two measurements cannot be fixed after the fact without taking the garment apart, which is the honest reason to buy one in person rather than online.

Both Brampton stores carry the range, and our team handles tailoring on site, with most adjustments finished in two to three days. If you have a wedding date, come in earlier than feels necessary. Sherwani alterations are more involved than a suit and it is not a job to rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a sherwani and a kurta?
A kurta is a loose tunic, worn on its own, appropriate for anything from a family dinner to a mehndi. A sherwani is a fitted, buttoned coat worn over a kurta, and it is formal wedding dress.

Is a sherwani Punjabi?
It is worn right across the subcontinent rather than belonging to one region. The style came out of Mughal court dress in the nineteenth century and is now standard groom wear in Punjabi, Pakistani, Muslim and North Indian weddings alike.

What should a groom wear versus a guest?
Grooms usually take ivory, cream or gold with heavier work. Guests are safer in pastels and lighter embroidery, so the groom stands out. If you are unsure, tell us your role and the event and we will point you at the right shelf.

How far ahead should I buy?
Three to four weeks before the wedding is comfortable. That leaves room for a fitting, the alteration itself, and a second look before you take it home.
